Before the end of this quarter, mammography – an x-ray imaging method used to examine the breast for the early detection of cancer and other breast diseases – will be available in Linden, New Amsterdam, Suddie and Lethem.

Such a move, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said on Tuesday, will help authorities more accurately understand what is happening with breast cancer across the country.

Furthermore, more people will be diagnosed early, affording them the opportunity to access the necessary treatment.

Dr Anthony was speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the GYS 170 Certification of the Georgetown Hospital’s Pathology Lab, and especially in the context of World Cancer Day today.

He pointed out that in terms of cancers that affect women, the number one would be breast cancer, followed by cervical cancer.

Prostate cancer is prevalent among men, while for both sexes, there is rectal cancers.

“These are the cancers that are most prevalent. We weren’t doing a lot in terms of HPV vaccine for cervical cancer. Because we have now put a lot of effort into this, we’re seeing the rates of vaccine coverage going up,” the minister shared.
