Census work at ‘advanced stage’ – Ashni Singh

Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh noted that work on the 2022 Census is at an advanced stage despite the challenges faced in collecting data across the country.

Dr. Singh addressed questions about the Census during a sitting of the Parliamentary Committee of Supply on Wednesday when Parliamentarians scrutinised the allocations for the Ministry of Finance.

“I am aware that the fieldwork is completed.

“My latest information is that they are at an advanced stage of analysis of the data, and triangulating that data and work has been going on, in parallel, of the preparation of the report,” Dr. Singh said in response to questions from Opposition Parliamentarian Juretha Fernandes.

The census is an official survey of the population.

This exercise started in 2022 but the Finance Minister told his colleagues that the enumerators faced several challenges while collecting data. The non-responsiveness of some households and difficulties accessing some areas because of the terrain.

The Finance Minister assured the Committee of Supply that the census will be concluded and published as soon as possible.

Previously, Dr. Singh disclosed that Guyana has seen “significant population growth” due to some of the preliminary findings he was privy to.
