Public servants will enjoy the full benefit of their 8% salary increase this year, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh said on Wednesday.

Dr. Singh, who also has responsibility for the Public Service, fielded questions about increases for public servants from Opposition Parliamentarian Tabitha Sarabo-Halley during the consideration of the budget estimates.

Per a multi-year agreement signed last year between the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), all public servants are to receive their 8% increase this year.

“The exact language of the agreement was 8% salary increase to be paid to public servants for 2025, retroactive to January 1, 2025.

“Whenever it is paid, it will be retroactive to January 1, 2025 so public servants will get the full benefit of the increase effective January 1 2025,” Dr. Singh told the Parliamentary Committee of Supply.

Outside of this engagement, the Parliamentarians scrutinised other aspects of the entire $8.4 billion allocation for the Ministry of Public Service. The sum was later approved by the Committee of Supply.
