In a social media post Friday morning, President Dr. Irfaan Ali strongly refuted businessman Terrence Campbell’s allegations that the President had approached him to be the Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2020 General and Regional Elections.
Dr. Ali described the allegations as “completely false.” He clarified that he never approached Campbell or suggested that he should be the Prime Ministerial candidate for either himself or the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
The President acknowledged that while he and Campbell had engaged in political discussions in the past, these talks did not include any such offer.
Dr. Ali remarked that during their time in opposition, he had consistently stated that the PPP/C was the only national party in the country and that its policies were both “pro-people and pro-Guyana.”
He also pointed out that, despite their conversations, no proposal was ever made for Campbell to assume the role of Prime Ministerial candidate.
Dr. Ali further elaborated on the role of the Vice President and General Secretary within the party, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo who has come under attack from Campbell.
He emphasised Dr. Jagdeo have not attacked anyone but instead responded “factually and politically” to statements and issues. He noted that some people in the country might believe they can criticise the PPP and its leadership without facing a response, but he made it clear that such assumptions would be misguided.
The allegations by Campbell first surfaced in a Facebook post, in which he claimed that he was “the first person” Dr. Ali had approached for the Prime Ministerial position.
