President Dr Irfaan Ali on Friday revealed that Guyana has engaged the United States on Donald Trump’s migration plans but clarified that any cooperation will not involve persons being deported to Guyana to be held in prisons.

“What we are discussing is our partnership with the US and as the US unfolds its programmes and plans, wherever Guyana can be of support we have expressed our support but nothing about having persons in prisons and having deportees here.

“… There are some specific issues that I will not go into details here which includes flight and movement of people.”

Last month, President Ali and the new United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio had an engagement where the two leaders address the crisis of illegal migration.

In a statement, Mr. Rubio’s spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the two leaders “agreed to jointly address this regional imperative and challenge.”

Meanwhile, Guyana’s Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo recently highlighted that the country will accept any Guyanese who is deported from the US due to new policies.

Talks of mass deportation from the US are increasingly frequent given President Donald Trump’s vow and recent executive order to revoke birthright citizenship for children born in the States with unlawful or temporary status.

Jagdeo, however, made it clear that Guyanese authorities would not accept citizens of other countries being deported here.
