Two police officers on mobile patrol in the Crabwood Creek School Dam area, Corentyne, Berbice, Thursday arrested a husband and wife after discovering 2.025kg of marijuana in their possession.

Acting on intelligence, police ranks proceeded to the home of 37-year-old labourer Premchand Kalicharran, also known as “Boyse,” of Lot 29, Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek. Kalicharran, a known figure to law enforcement for drug trafficking and other offences, was recently released from prison for simple larceny.

As officers approached the residence he shared with his reputed wife, Shazeeda Kumarie, they spotted Kalicharran seated on the landing, seemingly packaging an item. Upon swiftly exiting their vehicle and entering the yard, officers caught him red-handed.

Beside him was a multi-coloured bucket containing four bulky transparent wraps, one transparent plastic bag and fifty-two (52) small transparent ziplock bags, all filled with leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Police seized the suspected narcotics and presented them to Kalicharran. As this took place, Kumarie emerged from a bedroom within the house. Both suspects were informed of the offence, arrested, and cautioned.

Under caution, Kalicharran reportedly admitted: “Is me weed, you all come and find me with it.”

The couple was subsequently transported to Springlands Police Station, where the marijuana was weighed in their presence, confirming a total of 2.025kg.

Both suspects remain in custody pending charges as investigations continue.
