President Dr. Irfaan Ali has emphasised the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing sports and recreational facilities across Guyana, articulating a vision to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
In a national address on Thursday, the Head-of-State outlined the ambitious plans designed to position Guyana as a regional center for sports and entertainment.
Highlighting the progress made thus far, President Ali announced that as of last year, “a total of 550 sports grounds have been completed nationwide, with 246 of those located in hinterland communities.”
“These facilities ensure equitable access for all Guyanese,” he stated, reinforcing the government’s focus on inclusivity in sports development.
In addition to building new facilities, the government has prioritised installing lighting in 75 locations.
Ali noted that providing spaces for recreational opportunities is crucial for improving the overall standard of living.
“Quality of life and improving the standard of life is key,” he said, adding that recreational and sports facilities are vital components of holistic national development.
President Ali reiterated that a substantial investment of over G$2 billion has been earmarked for ground restoration and lighting installation in more than 100 additional grounds in 2025.
The plan also includes completing multi-purpose indoor facilities across various regions and five stadiums that will meet “international accreditation standards.”
“If you want to develop world-class sportsmen and women, these investments are crucial,” Ali stated, highlighting the interconnected nature of the nation’s sports, culture and economic growth.
The government has allocated G$8 billion in the National Budget for 2025 to continue advancing sports in Guyana.
In 2024, G$5 billion was spent on transforming the sector following the approval of supplementary funds.
The 2025 sports agenda includes completing a stadium in Palmyra and initiating a new international stadium at Crane, West Coast Demerara.
G$2 billion has been budgeted to support these developments for ancillary works related to the Palmyra stadium.
Moreover, G$1.3 billion will be allocated to complete multi-purpose sports facilities in key locations such as Anna Regina, Bayroc, Mackenzie and New Amsterdam, alongside multi-purpose sports halls set to be built in Leonora, Lethem, Mabaruma, Mahdia and Mongrippa Hill.
Also, G$100 million has been earmarked for a Cricket Academy at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara.
