See below the full statement issued by Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, the Chairman of the Board of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation:
(On Thursday) a senior doctor who has served the GPHC for a number of years was fired. Two other senior doctors were suspended.
The disciplinary action followed an incident involving the delivery of a baby that occurred at the GPHC recently.
The Board insists that where there is evidence of inappropriate behavior by staff, there will be no tolerance and there will be severe consequences. The case before us in this instance clearly demonstrated that senior staff members acted in a manner inconsistent with their responsibilities.
The Board commends management for their thorough, and rapid investigation. We commend management for its candid approach.
Senior doctor dismissed after GPHC probe into stillbirth case
The GPHC has set high standards and we are grateful that the vast majority of staff adhere to the high standards we expect.
By and large, the vast majority of the staff of GPHC conduct themselves and carry out their responsibilities with compassion and at a high quality consistent with international standards. We take the opportunity to commend the staff for their dedicated and high standard service to the thousands we serve.
The Board has insisted that where these standards are deliberately not upheld, the responsible staff members will face stern consequences.
While these actions cannot repair and remove the hurt and pain endured by the family, we hope that the action taken by the hospital will bring some relief.
The Board thank the family for working with the hospital to bring some closure to the unfortunate incident.
