The Ministry of Labour launched a new mobile application called SkillsConnect on Tuesday, a move that will help job seekers engage organisations searching for workers.

The app, which was designed by the National Data Management Authority, allows job seekers to browse available jobs while employers can advertise skills needed. It also allows for direct communication between employers and job seekers.

The app was launched during a simple ceremony held in the Ministry of Labour boardroom at Brickdam, Georgetown.

    How it works:

-Persons are required to downloads the app and sign up

    – They will then be required to register and verify their account via a SMS code

    – Users can post jobs and services within a few tabs. After submitting a post, it must be approved by a moderator before it goes live

    – Users can also send and receive connection requests based on jobs posted and serviced advertise

    – Once the connection is accepted, users can negotiate job offers

    – Real time updates are also provided

In his remarks, Chief Labour Officer, Dhaneshwar Deonarine said the app will complement the Ministry’s online job bank and supports the government’s aim of creating an accessible platform where workers can connect, collaborate, build relationships regardless of their location.

“It is designed for blue collar workers whether unskilled, semiskilled or skilled to easily access job opportunities and market their skills,” Deonarine said.

Essentially, Deonarine explained, it is catered for workers who perform manual labour mainly in the manufacturing and construction sectors.

“It is designed to empower workers across the country by connecting them with job opportunities and enabling them to advertise their skills services.

“Whether you are looking for workers to complete a job or you are seeking work, SkillsConnect provide a simple yet effective way to connect with opportunity,” Deonarine said.

And to cater for foreigners, the app features a Spanish translation feature.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton said the initiative was rolled out to ensure people have access to jobs.

“One of the thing I think SkillsConnect would allow is bridging the skills gap internally.

“So SkillsConnect would allow for the internal labour shortage. While there is a lot of focus on migrant labour, the case is being made that some of the skills we are looking for might be just there,” Hamilton said.

The app can be downloaded via Google Play Store and the App store.
