Charles and Albert bag U-20 100m titles at National Secondary Schools Championships

On Tuesday, the National Track and Field Facility witnessed a flurry of speed and athleticism as the inaugural National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships commenced.

Skylar Charles and Adessa Albert took centre stage in the Under-20 100m events.

Charles, representing Vreed-En-Hoop Secondary, clinched gold in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.69 seconds.

However, the national athlete, coached by Julian Edmonds, will likely seek improvement as he prepares for the CARIFTA Games next month in Trinidad and Tobago.

Onesi Dunn (10.93s) of East Ruimveldt and Lequacey Brumell (11.01s) of President’s College completed the podium.

Adessa Albert of McKenzie High School delivered a dominant performance in the women’s 100m, crossing the finish line in 12.26 seconds. Shelana Semple (12.73s) of The Bishops’ High and Leanna Fraser (13.32s) of Mahaicony Secondary followed behind.

In the Under-17 category, Angel Jeffrey of Christianburg Wismar Secondary won the girls’ 100m in 12.52 seconds, while Ezeki Millington (10.74s) of Mahaicony narrowly defeated Gordon Thompson (10.78s) of McKenzie High in the boys’ race.

Tesianna Harris of Wisburg Secondary continued her impressive form, winning the U-14 100m in 12.56 seconds, and Omari Welch (10.61s) of Corentyne won the boys’ equivalent.

Keanna Archer of Tutorial High School won the Grade Seven 100m in 13.43s, with Shania Lucas (10.60s) of Bladen Hall and Latika Ramlall (13.73s) of St. Ignatius Secondary securing second and third place.

Nickel Clarke of Bygeval triumphed in the boys’ race in 12.39s, followed by Timothy Springer (12.96s) and Isiah Daniels (13.08s) of Three Miles Secondary.

In distance events, Ebo McNeil of McKenzie High School won the Boys’ 14-16 3000m in 10:07.32s, with Colin Bernard of Sand Creek Secondary (10:07.43s) and Paul David of Mahaicony (11:29.07s) rounding out the top three.

Timothy Smith of Harmony Secondary won the Boys 5000m open in 17:02.40s, followed by David Bovell of Mahaicony Technical Institute (18:26.92s) and Mikael Antigua of President’s College (18:27.64s).

In field events, Camille Sinclair of Karaburi won the girls’ 10-14 High Jump with a leap of 1.35m, with Latifa George of McKenzie High (1.35m) and Shontelle Jobe of St. Ignatius Secondary (1.30m) also performing well.

Malachi Montooth won the Boys Under-15 High Jump with a jump of 1.63m, ahead of Dequone Ross of Line Path Secondary (1.60m) and Thaddea Williams of D.C Fox Secondary (1.55m).

Rodel Greene won the boys U-20 High Jump with 1.95m, followed by Immanuel Adams of President’s College (1.85m) and Owen Hooper of Queen’s College (1.70m).

The championships will continue on Wednesday and conclude on Thursday evening.
