President’s College triumphs in thrilling end to National Secondary Schools Championships

President’s College has been crowned champions of the inaugural National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships 2025, after three days of intense competition at the National Track and Field Centre, West Coast Demerara.

The final standings saw President’s College secure 257 points, narrowly edging out pre-tournament favourites MacKenzie High School, who finished with 253.50 points.

Christianburg Wismar Secondary (197.33 points), St. Ignatius Secondary (129 points), and Mahaicony Secondary School (100 points) completed the top five.

Meanwhile, Skylar Charles, representing Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary, cemented his reputation as a formidable sprinter, completing a double victory in the U-20 category.

Charles clocked 21.63 seconds in the 200m, adding to his earlier 100m triumph. His performance has positioned him as a strong contender for the upcoming CARIFTA Games in Trinidad.

Kaidon Persaud of Linden Technical Foundation responded with a strong showing in the boys’ U-20 800m, winning in 1:58.33s. Jonathan Bristol (2:03.52s) and Mikael Antigua (2:08.14s) finished second and third respectively.

Donnel Fraser of MacKenzie High School continued her impressive form, winning the girls’ 800m in 2:35.65s, adding to her collection of titles. Vannytta Francis (2:39.84s) and Amelia Dover (2:48.43s) completed the podium.

In the field events, Joey Ghanie secured victory in the boys’ U-20 Javelin with a throw of 48.03m. Emmon Goodluck (47.70m) and Samuel Ramitt took second and third place.

Deshawn Europe of De Willem Secondary won the boys’ under-15 800m in 2:20.27s, with Nashaun Rigby (2:21.74s) and Rashad Changlee (2:23.79s) securing second and third.

A highlight of the final day was Areanna Bart’s victory in the girls’ U-15 800m. The Stewartville Secondary athlete, celebrating her birthday, won in 2:36.10s despite challenging rainy conditions.

Anya Rose (2:40.72s) and Malia Young (2:42.84s) followed behind.

The championships, which emphasised school participation, provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent and experience competitive athletics.

President’s College’s victory marks a significant achievement and highlights the depth of talent within Guyana’s school sports system.
