Lenox Shuman, Chairman of the Liberty and Justice Party, on Monday night castigated the Alliance For Change (AFC) for what he described as “divisive rhetoric” and an attempt to undermine the national unity that surrounds Guyana’s sovereignty.

Mr. Shuman, in a statement, responded to a recent release issued by the AFC. In that release, the AFC attempted to cast aspersions on the government’s handling of the border controversy with Venezuela.

But the LJP Leader flagged those attempts, noting that the party seems to be inflaming divisions.

“This is a time for unity, not for reckless politicking.

“The AFC’s irresponsible outburst flies in the face of this sacrosanct national ethos, disregarding the fragile peace that our government, security forces, and diplomatic corps are navigating with prudence and strategy,” Mr. Shuman said.

Beyond addressing the AFC’s recent release, Mr. Shuman opined that the party seems to be promoting division. He accused the party of inflaming tensions through calls for geographic division, its apparent promotion of ethnic fragmentation, and attempts to sow distrust in institutions.

“This toxic political strategy of inflaming divisions has no place in a nation that must stand united in the face of serious and sustained challenges from Venezuela.

“History has shown us that when nations face existential threats to their territorial integrity, political forces coalesce behind the government of the day to defend the national interest,” he added.

Because of these concerns, Mr. Shuman said his party is urging the AFC to adopt a “Guyana first” framework that recognises that the country’s sovereignty is non-negotiable, regardless of which political party is in office.

He also said the country’s borders, security, and national integrity must always take precedence over political gamesmanship, and all political forces must work together to protect Guyana from external threats.
