Nandkishore Rup Jnr, called Niron, a resident of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was jailed after he extorted a man.
Police said Nandkishore was arrested on March 11, 2024 for the offence of using his computer system with intent to export a benefit from a person. The act was committed on Troy Persaud sometime between February 27 and March 11, 2024.
He is accused of using the computer system to intentionally extort $1.5 million from Persaud.
Police said the man contacted Persaud via Facebook Messenger and demanded that the virtual complaint pay him $1.5 million or else he (Nandkishore) would publish nude photographs and video of Persaud and his wife on Facebook.
A report was made to the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters and a sting operation was organised by the unit, which resulted in Nandkishore’s arrest.
He appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weever at the Wales Magistrate Court on May 8, 2024 where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of ‘Using a Computer System to Extort a Benefit from Another Person’ in contravention of Section 19(4) of the Cyber Crime Act #18, Contrary to Section 19(5) (a) of the Cyber Crime Act #18.
    He was granted $100,000.
On Tuesday, Magistrate Weever found the defendant  guilty of the offence and he was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the said offence
