An eight-year-old girl has sustained injuries after being struck by a speeding motorcycle on the Cumberland Public Road in East Canje Berbice.

The victim, Sherry Fraser, a student at Cumberland Primary School and resident of Lot 201 Victoria Street, was involved in the incident that occurred on Monday, March 17th, 2025, at approximately 14:50 hrs.

The News Room was informed that 19-year-old Ashwindev Persaud was operating motorcycle # CP 4942 and was heading north along the western drive lane of Cumberland Public Road at a high speed, despite wearing a safety helmet. As he approached the intersection, he collided with Fraser, who was crossing the road on the pedestrian crossing from east to west.

Due to the impact, Fraser fell onto the roadway, suffering injuries to her head and body. Following the collision, she was promptly collected by the motorcycle driver and concerned bystanders and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Fraser received treatment for lacerations on her head and was subsequently referred to Georgetown Public Hospital for advanced care.

A breathalyzer test was administered to the driver, yielding a reading of zero micrograms.

The driver is currently in custody as investigations continue.
