Guyanese Olympians welcome Hermonstine’s elevation to AAG presidency

Guyanese Olympians Marian Burnett, Chelsea Edghill, Aliann Pompey, James Wren-Gilkes, June Collison neè Griffith and Adam Harris have welcomed the elevation of Sheryl Hermonstine to the presidency of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).

Hermonstine, a long-standing administrator of Track and Field, was elected to the post on March 16, 2025, replacing Aubrey Hutson.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Olympians labelled Hermonstine’s rise to the post as “a significant and transformative moment for sports governance in our country.”

They added: “Sheryl Hermonstine’s leadership is more than just a new chapter for the AAG- it is a powerful statement on representation, inclusivity, and the role of women in shaping the future of sports.”

“This is a win not just for athletics, but for the future of sports in Guyana.”

The election of Sheryl Hermonstine as President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) marks a significant and transformative moment for sports governance in our country.

As the world witnesses Kristy Coventry’s historic election as the first female and first African President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Guyana is also embracing progress by electing a female leader to head one of its most prominent sporting bodies.

Sheryl Hermonstine’s leadership is more than just a new chapter for the AAG- it is a powerful statement on representation, inclusivity, and the role of women in shaping the future of sports.

Her presidency will inspire young girls, female athletes and aspiring sports administrators, proving that women belong at the forefront of decision-making in sports.
