Before the end of 2025, President Dr Irfaan Ali said the Government would be moving to design and subsequently rebuild the Essequibo Coast main road into a four-lane highway.

“…We will commence before the end of this year, the design and rebuilding of this [road] into a four lane highway here in Essequibo,” President Ali announced on Wednesday.

The Essequibo Coast Road, a paved two-lane road, connects Supenaam on the Essequibo River with Charity on the Pomeroon River, a distance of 36 miles, with Anna Regina located halfway between the two towns.

Dr. Ali was at the time addressing residents gathered at the commissioning ceremony for the Deeds and Commercial Registries Office in Suddie, Region Two.

Over the past years, Dr Ali said the focus has been on building community roads and infrastructure.

However, he said the four-lane highway has become vital with the rapid growth of traffic in the region.

In addition, Dr Ali said the Minister of Tourism, Oneidge Waldron has been asked to establish a marketing plan for the region.

“Because as you know, there are several resorts that are being built, new hotels, more rooms already on weekend… we are out of rooms in this region,” he said.

To support this, President Ali added that the government is “actively” working to procure an additional ferry that will operate the Parika to Essequibo route.

The initiative, President Ali said, forms part of efforts to further enhance Region Two. Since 2020, over $100 billion has been expended in the region.
