Former national table tennis champion Nigel Bryan is competing at the prestigious World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender event in Chennai, India, from March 25 to 31.

A seasoned Caribbean medalist, Bryan is signaling his intent to become a key figure in Guyana’s national men’s team for upcoming international competitions.

His appearance at the Chennai Contender marks his first WTT event.

In his opening match, he faced a formidable opponent: Hong Kong’s Yiu Kwan, a world-leading player with recent victories over Japan’s current world number three, Tamokazu Harimoto, and former world number one Xu Xin of China.

Despite an extended period from international competition, Bryan displayed glimpses of his renowned brilliance, gradually improving throughout the match.

However, Yiu Kwan’s experience proved decisive, securing victory in straight games: 11-3, 11-6, 11-8. Bryan showed resilience and launched some impressive counter-attacks against Kong’s offensive play.

Bryan’s participation, alongside that of national junior player Krystian Sahadeo, was made possible through a collaboration between the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), the University of Jain, and the National Sports Commission.

Bryan and Sahadeo are in India on a training scholarship facilitated by a joint initiative involving the Guyanese government, the GTTA, the University of Jain, and the GOAL program.

This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission through Minister Charles Ramson Jr. and Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, aims to enhance Guyanese athletes and coaches’ coaching and athletic capabilities.

The scholarship provides training opportunities for athletes and coaches from six sports disciplines.

It focuses on modern training methodologies and scientific approaches to coaching in high-yield environments.

It also offers young athletes the chance to train alongside high-performance players.

The overarching goal is to cultivate a core group of talented athletes capable of competing at the highest level and representing Guyana with distinction on the international stage.

After the Contender event, Bryan and Sahadeo will remain in Chennai to participate in a training camp to further develop their skills and experience.
