Sumintra Sarju, affectionately known as ‘Mai,’ reached the impressive milestone of 104 years on Thursday. She was born on March 27, 1921, in East Canje, Berbice.

Mai met her husband, Lawrence Bharat, and together, they embarked on a beautiful journey of marriage. They later moved to Bloomfield Village, where they had a family of nine children, seven of whom are still thriving today.

After more than 25 years in Bloomfield Village, Mai and Lawrence resettled in number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. Sadly, her husband passed away several years ago, but Mai’s resilience remains unwavering.

Throughout her life, Mai worked tirelessly in the sugar industry, contributing significantly to her family’s well-being. She engaged in various roles, including cutting cane and burning grass.

Showcasing her strong work ethic and dedication, she also worked in the rice fields, planting and harvesting rice.

Alongside her husband, she cultivated a flourishing garden filled with a diverse array of vegetables and actively participated in fishing.

At her age now, she wakes up every morning, takes a bath, and goes outside to do her prayers at an altar in her front yard.

Mai enjoys the caring support of her relatives. While she faces a few health challenges, including slight hearing difficulties, she retains the ability to move around freely.

Sumintra Sarju is a proud matriarch, surrounded by 44 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, 68 great-great-grandchildren, and 213 great-great-great-grandchildren, a testament to her enduring legacy.
