A new housing scheme is under development in Kwakwani, Region 10, as part of efforts to provide residents with safer and better living conditions. The first 300 house lots were allocated on Friday during a ‘Dream Realised’ housing initiative in the community.

Kwakwani residents, especially those who live by the waterfront area, deal with massive flooding during every rainy season. This is part of the reason that the government committed to starting a new housing development.

“Those on the waterfront, as you know, once there is prolonged rainfall, they are flooded out,” Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal highlighted during remarks.

So the new scheme is being developed.

Already, a $1.6 billion contract has been signed to immediately commence infrastructural works in the new housing scheme. This will provide employment opportunities for the residents of this community. Minister Croal said opportunities such as labour, machine operators, drivers and suppliers of aggregates are available.

“The first phase infrastructure work will be completed this year and you will be accessing your land before this year finishes,” Croal revealed.

Several residents also received land titles on Friday during the exercise.

“This land titling exercise we are embarking on today is in keeping with our work programme,” Croal said.

Regarding the water sector, the Minister acknowledged concerns raised by residents about the level of service they are receiving. He noted that a request has been made for another water well, and investigations have revealed that the current issues stem from breakages in the system. To address these problems, a contract worth $10 million has been established, ensuring that residents will receive better quality service moving forward.
