President Dr Irfaan Ali on Tuesday dismissed accusations that he and his government are victimising businessman Azruddin Mohamed and his family, pointing out the irony of that accusation since previously he was accused of protecting the Mohameds due to their personal acquaintance.

President Ali was responding to media inquiries on the sidelines of an event at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown.

“One of the first things that occurred when I came into office was my dear friend Chabrol came to me and asked whether there is any special protection for the Mohameds because of my relationship,” Ali recalled, referring to reporter Dennis Chabrol.

“I assured him then that if there was any evidence of wrongdoing suggested by the U.S., the necessary action would be taken,” the president stated, emphasising that at that time, no evidence had been provided.

The situation evolved when the United States issued sanctions against the Mohameds for tax evasion. Ali said the critics, who initially accused him of shielding the family, swiftly reversed their stance and questioned the government’s response to the sanctions.

“The very people who are suddenly the defenders and upholders were the ones who came to me and said, ‘Is it because you and this man are acquaintances that no action is taken?'” Ali said.

He added that the government requested additional details from U.S. authorities, subsequently received relevant information, and is proceeding accordingly.

Ali rejected accusations of blackmail or politically motivated actions against Azruddin Mohamed, maintaining his administration’s focus remains firmly on governance and the law.

“We are never involved in blackmail. Blackmail for what?” he asked. “We are going to win the elections because we have worked hard, delivered, and stayed true to the trust people placed in us.”
