1,600 house lots to be allocated along East Coast in two days

Between Friday and Saturday, a total of 1,600 house lots for four communities along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) will be allocated to residents of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).

The allocations will be done in the communities of Success, Felicity, Chateau Margot and Le Ressouvenir.

The Ministry of Housing and Water is hosting a ‘Dream Realised’ Housing Drive at the Arthur Chung Conference Center at Liliendaal to distribute the lots.

The activity, according to Minister within the Minsitry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, forms part of the ministry’s quest to ensure all applications, especially dates 2019 and before, are addressed.

“We are making 1,600 lots available over two days for allocation.

“So its people who have been waiting for some time and it’s in keeping with our commitment to address the backlog in the system,” Rodrigues said.

Region Four is the largest region in the country and it therefore represents the highest demand for housing.

Currently, Rodrigues said there are about 48,000 pending housing applications in the region.

“We respond in a way that brings relief to people.

“We see the housing sector as a vehicle through which generational wealth can be created,” Rodrigues said.

The housing drive is the 60th of such to be held over the past four and half years which saw thousands of allocations.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal said since 2020, over 44,000 house lots were allocated and the ministry is likely to surpass its 50,000 mark before the end of this year.

“Every day, right now on average we are seeing about 300 persons who are there whether it’s for new applicants, follow up for signing of agreements, queries or issues. 300 persons pass through the ministry every single day,” Croal said.

Croal said the allocations over the next two days are about 65 percent of the allocations in the region. And, he said allottees will be able to access their lands by the end of 2025.

Croal therefore urged persons to be patient as he promised that every concern and application will be addressed at some point.
