Olympic champion Felix Sanchez inspires Guyanese athletes to ‘dream big’ at training clinic
Two-time Olympic 400m hurdles champion Felix Sanchez is currently in Guyana, sharing his extensive knowledge with the nation’s aspiring track and field athletes.
The Dominican Republic’s sporting icon, a gold medallist at Athens 2004 and London 2012, is leading a four-day elite training clinic at the National Track and Field Facility, which commenced on Wednesday.
Approximately 65 young athletes are benefiting from this exceptional opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best.
Sanchez, also a two-time World Champion (in 2001 and 2003), aims to ignite a passion for ambitious goal-setting and unwavering dedication in the next generation of Guyanese track and field stars.
“What are your dreams? I hope they are big and you are here to become better athletes…you have the talent, you are diamonds in the rough that need this help and support to continue to grow,” Sanchez encouraged the athletes.
The visit of the esteemed Olympian is a key component of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s Elite Training Programme for athletics, with vital support from the Athletics Association of Guyana.
Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. emphasised the profound significance of this initiative, highlighting the crucial connection between emerging talent and proven success.
“This programme gives you an extremely comprehensive training that helps to move from where you are now and helps you to be as great as you want to be,” the Minister noted.
The sprint and hurdles clinic, meticulously planned over the past year, will involve numerous practical assessments conducted by Sanchez.
Minister Ramson Jr. revealed that his initial meeting with Sánchez during his visit to Guyana the previous year laid the groundwork for this significant training opportunity.
He emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to investing in programmes that help Guyanese athletes reach their full potential on the international stage.
Despite his distinguished career representing the Dominican Republic, Sanchez’s presence carries a regional significance that resonates deeply with the Guyanese athletes.
The Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Guyana, Ernesto Torres-Pereyra, was also present to offer his encouragement to the young sportsmen and women. “We should all make the best of this opportunity,” Ambassador Torres-Pereyra urged.
Born in New York City and raised in the Dominican Republic, Sanchez’s inspiring journey to Olympic glory included a successful collegiate career with the University of Southern California Trojans.
His remarkable story and proven track record are anticipated to leave a lasting and positive impact on aspiring athletes in Guyana.
Adding further weight to his visit, Sanchez is also scheduled to meet with President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who has an interest in the development and advancement of sports.
