UPDATE: Argument over child’s paternity leads to fatal chopping

A violent chopping incident at Plantation Caracas, West Canje—also known as High Dam in New Amsterdam—has resulted in the deaths of Leon Fordyce, also known as “Nastyman”, a 45-year-old labourer, and 35-year-old Shawn Timothy La Fleur.
A third person, 40-year-old Anganisha Newyear, also known as “Angie”, is currently hospitalised with injuries.
The incident, which occurred between 23:30 hrs and midnight on Sunday, reportedly stemmed from a heated argument over the paternity of a two-month-old child.
According to information gathered, Fordyce and Newyear were in a common-law relationship.
Newyear was first confronted by La Fleur who dealt her several wounding blows about her body. She was rushed to the hospital.
The conflict escalated when Newyear’s relatives attacked La Fleur in retaliation.
As La Fleur lay unconscious, word of the incident spread quickly. Fordyce, who was in the process of closing his roadside shop, was then attacked by La Fleur’s relatives.
Shawn’s mother, 50-year-old Nicola Christine La Fleur, recounted that she had spoken with her son earlier in the evening, before receiving a distressing phone call. When she rushed outside, she discovered Shawn lying unresponsive on the roadway with a severe head wound.
When asked about the possible motive, Nicola stated that her son had been distraught over the uncertainty of the child’s paternity.
“She said the child is my son’s. And my son said it’s not his, because the baby doesn’t resemble his other two children. This one is darker,” Nicola explained.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident as they work to piece together the events that led to the tragic deaths.
