The gate of the East Ruimveldt Police station was blown off early Saturday morning after an improvised explosive device was thrown at the facility by unknown individuals.

The News Room has been informed that the incident occurred around 00:40 hrs at the outpost, which is situated at Vlissengen Square and East Front Road, Georgetown.

Information gathered by the News Room revealed that a Constable, who was on duty at the time, recalled hearing two loud explosions at the southern side of the compound.

Upon making checks, she discovered the southern gate was missing. An alarm was immediately raised.

Ranks from the Crime Scene Unit were summoned, and upon investigation, they found the gate about six feet south of the outpost.

    CCTV footage is being reviewed.

Reports are that nearby residents heard two loud explosions followed by sounds of objects falling onto their roofs.

The explosion was heard by residents in Georgetown, East Bank of Demerara, and as far as the West Coast and West Bank of Demerara.
