A late-night collision along the Bee Hive Public Road on Tuesday claimed the life of a 28-year-old man from Mahaicony and left several others nursing injuries, in what police are describing as a tragic and avoidable road accident.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 20:00hrs and involved two vehicles — motor car #PGG 2109, driven by the now-deceased Dindyal Rantydeo, and motor car #PAH 766, driven by a 32-year-old male resident of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. Rantydeo’s vehicle had one occupant, a 37-year-old man also from Fairfield, Mahaicony. The other vehicle had five occupants, including the driver.

Preliminary investigations indicate that motor car #PAH 766 was travelling east along the northern carriageway of the Bee Hive public road when the driver observed a westbound vehicle ahead with its hazard lights flashing — a warning that a horse was crossing the road.

At that moment, Rantydeo, who was heading west in motor car #PGG 2109, reportedly overtook the vehicle with the hazard lights and collided head-on with motor car #PAH 766, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact was severe. Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist and transported the unconscious Rantydeo in a police vehicle to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead on arrival. His passenger and all five occupants of the second vehicle sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital for medical treatment.

Police responded to the scene at around 20:10hrs. The driver of motor car #PAH 766 was subjected to a breathalyser test, which revealed no trace of alcohol. Both vehicles have been impounded for mechanical inspection by a Licensing and Certifying Officer, and a Notice of Intended Prosecution has been served as investigations continue.

This incident adds to a worrying trend of fatal collisions on Guyana’s roads, many of which involve overtaking in high-risk situations. Authorities are once again urging motorists to exercise caution, especially when visibility is compromised or road hazards are present.
