In a landmark moment for Guyana’s judiciary, five new justices were sworn in to the Court of Appeal on Wednesday—marking the largest single increase in the court’s history.

President Dr Irfaan Ali presided over the ceremony at his Shiv Chanderpaul Drive office, describing the appointments as “a vital step” towards a stronger, more responsive justice system.

“This is about justice delivered better, faster and fairer,” the President declared. “It’s a big day for Guyana.”

Of the seven judges recommended for appointment, five have now officially taken up their posts: Justices Navindra Singh, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Damone Younge, Dr Rafiq Khan SC, and Dr Joycelin Kyte-Thomas. Notably, three of the five are women.

“Sixty per cent of those sworn in today are women,” Dr Ali noted. “That’s not just progress—it’s powerfully symbolic of the role women play in shaping our future.”

The expansion follows amendments to the Court of Appeal Act in April 2023, which increased the number of judges from five to nine, in response to mounting demand for more efficient appellate reviews.

“This court plays a critical role,” Ali said. “It upholds rights, preserves constitutional order, and ensures the law is applied fairly and consistently.”

While celebrating the new appointments, the President was quick to remind the appointees of the gravity of their roles.

“You are now the final word in many matters. With that honour comes an immense responsibility.”

He called on the judges to embody “scrupulousness, impartiality and integrity”, emphasising that their rulings will not only shape case law but influence policy and public trust.

“These aren’t just appointments—they’re investments in our democracy,” he concluded. “Let your work echo with justice.”

The swearing-in was attended by senior members of the judiciary, the Attorney General, members of Cabinet, and the Judicial Service Commission.
