The Lusignan Golf Club (LGC), long considered the home of golf in Guyana, is expanding its scope beyond competitive play to champion youth development, inclusivity, and broader community engagement.

Established in 1966, the club has evolved into a platform for social and developmental programmes, aiming to reach underserved communities and promote the sport’s growth nationwide.

A key initiative is the LGC’s Annual Summer Golf Camp, which targets young people in Regions 4, 5, 6, and 10. The programme introduces children to golf through practical clinics and mentorship from experienced players and coaches, managed by volunteer club members.

“The Lusignan Golf Club continues to contribute through programmes developed in partnership with Republic Bank and the children’s golf summer programme,” stated Brian Hackett, the club’s Public Relations Officer. “We usually work with children in Regions 4, 10, 6, and 5 to start, but we hope to expand this programme countrywide.”

Hackett noted the programme is driven by passionate members and supported by paid personnel where necessary. The club is seeking renewed sponsorship from Republic Bank to facilitate its national expansion.

Another significant initiative is the formation of the Fairway Ladies, a group of professional women and diplomats new to golf. Through coaching and planned league play, the LGC is fostering inclusivity and encouraging more women to participate.

Beyond youth and women-focused programmes, the club is strengthening ties with Guyana’s business community. Partnerships with organisations such as AmCham Guyana, Macorp, Geniquip, Banks DIH, and Ansa McAl are integral to the club’s sustainability and outreach.

“Our business community continues to play a major role in sustaining golf in Guyana and across the region through their unequivocal financial support,” Hackett affirmed. “LGC continues to foster these relationships to ensure both parties receive tangible benefits from the interaction.”

Hackett also revealed advanced discussions with two hotel proprietors, with formal partnerships expected by the end of 2025. These developments could introduce a new dimension to Guyana’s golfing experience, potentially attracting sports tourism and further commercial opportunities.

In addition to sports-related programmes, the LGC is expanding into charitable efforts. “We have done charity work and have a proposal to collaborate with one of the medical institutions in Guyana to help raise funds for charitable organisations,” Hackett added. “These are facets we continue to work on to make this a success.”

As the Lusignan Golf Club continues its evolution, its commitment to development, inclusion, and service aims to be a model for how sport can drive positive societal change. (LGC Press Release)
