The Board of Industrial Training (BIT) continues to explore more training opportunities for persons but already noted that some 60 per cent of 13,000 recorded persons trained are women and girls.

This was highlighted by Labour Minister, Joseph Hamilton on Friday.

“We are proud of that record and we will continue to do that. The government made more money available to BIT to do training outside of executing programmes via their resources, we have multiple collaborations at the moment.

“We have a programme for women that is funded by the World Bank,” Hamilton said.

He also said BIT is currently expanding its reach in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) with some 2,000 persons expected to be trained for gold mining in the region. This is part of efforts to support persons living in the region.

“We have already started [and] at the moment of over 200 persons are in training and we are to train 1,200 who will work in the development of the mine and then another 1,000 who will work in the mine. The focus is on people who live in Region Seven,” he said.

He also said that BIT’s 115th anniversary is being celebrated, and the ministry is conducting several exhibitions in the ten administrative regions to engage young people with skills training and the programmes available for them to participate in.

Areas such as agro-processing, welding, joinery and fabrication, and commercial food preparations are being displayed during the exhibitions.
