A new era of football is about to commence at Wealdstone FC, with the appointment of a new manager.

The club announced former Wealdstone captain Sam Cox as the new first team manager.

The 34-year-old was a fan favourite both on and off the pitch in his time at Wealdstone as a player.

Cox returns to the post as the official new first team manager after his successful spell as interim manager at the end of the 2023/24 season.

That season saw Sam Cox and the Stones beat Oldham Athletic in a 3-2 victory on the last day of the campaign to secure safety.

The 34-year-old was a fan favourite both on and off the pitch in his time at Wealdstone as a player

Cox, former captain of Guyana’s Golden Jaguars, had initially returned to Grosvenor Vale back in January 2024 as the first team coach for the Stones after manager at the time Stuart Maynard departed to manage Notts County.

He stepped up to the interim role and oversaw the final results of the season, including a very memorable 4-2 win over Dorking and a 1-0 win over Chesterfield.

As a player for Wealdstone, Cox made 80 appearances for the club between 2016 and 2019, adding up to nearly 350 career appearances.

Cox graduated from Tottenham Hotspur Academy where he had been putting his UEFA A licence into practice and developing young talent.

    Decision to appoint Cox

When looking to appoint a manager, Wealdstone’s board sought to work with a manager who is an outstanding coach and able to inspire the players and get the best out of the ambitious group.

The decision to give Cox the full-time role was driven by the club’s board’s belief that he embodies the attitude, culture and work ethic that Wealdstone value.

Sam himself is in the process of hiring his assistant and the club will update supporters as soon as there is further news available.
