In an effort to modernise its services for the digital age, stakeholders of the National Library of Guyana gathered on Thursday for the first engagement in a series of consultations to shape a five-year development plan.

The session, held at the Central Library in Georgetown, brought together key figures including Chief Librarian Miss Emily King, Deputy Chief Librarian Miss Nadine Moore, Chairman of the Committee Miss Anieshaw Mohamed, Former University of Guyana Librarian Miss Gwyneth George, and regular patrons.

The governing body hopes to embrace emerging technologies to make the library more accessible and relevant to modern readers. Planned initiatives include updating digital databases, expanding services to rural areas, and introducing innovative spaces like AI-powered help desks, podcast studios, and creative hubs.

“Libraries are more than just books—we are dynamic community spaces for learning, innovation, collaboration and inclusion,” said Miss King during her remarks.

Since its founding in 1909, the National Library has expanded its reach through a network of branches, rural centers, bookmobile services, and deposit collections. The Central Library serves as the administrative hub, coordinating library operations across the country.

Deputy Chief Librarian Miss Moore emphasised that the transformation cannot be achieved in isolation. “It requires a combined effort,” she said, stressing the importance of input from both stakeholders and everyday users.

Ms. Mohamed, Committee Chairman, highlighted the alignment of the library’s new vision with national goals.

“This engagement is important in ensuring that the library’s development aligns with the nation’s strategies—especially in the areas of education, lifelong learning, and preserving our country’s cultural and historical posterity,” she noted.

Patrons of the library shared in the discussions of the future of the library

The library’s proposed vision aims to ensure all Guyanese can access information beyond the physical walls of the building. Efforts are already underway to improve digital literacy among staff and patrons, and to bring services to more underserved communities.
