NGSA 2025: Guyana’s best results ever due to ‘back-breaking & consistent work’ – Manickchand

Thousands of children wrote the 2025 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and earned the best ever pass rates, according to Education Minister Priya Manickchand.

Manickchand said this on Wednesday, ahead of the announcement of the top performers of the 2025 assessment at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal.

She said the overall pass rate moved from 49% to 63%.

Earlier in the ceremony, CXC’s Director of Operations, Dr. Nicole Manning, highlighted that there was an improvement in children’s performances across all four subject areas tested. And Manickchand said these improved performances came as a result of “back-breaking and consistent work.”

She detailed some of the targeted interventions implemented to aid learning and encourage greater school attendance. These interventions include the creation of learning materials for children to cushion the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, providing breakfast to children from Grades Three to Six, and distributing school supplies to children.

She also reminded the children, parents, and teachers gathered at the Conference Centre of the government’s ambitious plan of building new schools in all regions. This move, she explained, provides comfortable, modern learning facilities to children but also eliminates the need for primary tops.

Additionally, Manickchand opined that the government’s decision to have all teachers trained is also contributing to the improved performance.

So what are the improvements?

For English Language, 69.25% of the pupils passed; last year, this was 66.79%.

In Social Studies, there was a 64.7% pass rate compared to 62.88%.

In Science, the pass rate went up from 54% last year to 63.7% this year.

And finally, in Mathematics, the pass rate went up to 55.51% from 40.36% last year.
