With improved fitness and skills, GSA backs junior team for CASA success

Guyana’s junior squash team is heading to the Cayman Islands with high hopes of success at the 2025 Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championship, which runs from June 29 to July 5.

The squad announced by the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) includes experienced players and promising newcomers, all eager to build on the nation’s strong squash legacy in the region.

At a Wednesday afternoon press conference at the National Racquet Centre, GSA President David Fernandes expressed his confidence in the team’s potential.

“I think this year we have a pretty talented group, but dedication and hard work will play a critical role in the team’s success,” Fernandes said.

Fernandes, also the current President of CASA, further explained, “Over the years, we’ve produced some strong contenders, but this is one of the groups where I’ve seen significant growth. I know they will proudly represent themselves, their families, coaches, and Guyana.”

Guyana has a rich history in the Junior CASA Championships, having secured the overall title in 2022.

The nation also enjoyed an unprecedented 12-year reign at the top, winning consecutive overall titles from 2005 to 2016, firmly establishing itself as a dominant force in Caribbean junior squash.

Last year in the British Virgin Islands, Guyana finished second overall, with the boys’ team placing third and the girls’ team finishing fifth.

With a blend of experience, fresh talent, and strong backing from their association and sponsors, Team Guyana will aim to continue its legacy of excellence and challenge for top honours at the Junior CASA Championships in the Cayman Islands.

This year’s team will be led by Under-19 champion Louis Da Silva, whose leadership and court skills are expected to be crucial.

He will be supported by a talented group including Justin Ten-Pow, Emily Fung-A-Fatt, Ethan Bulkan, Kaylee Lowe, and Zion Hickerson, among other emerging talents.

The support of several key sponsors, including E-Net, the Guyana Olympic Association, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the National Sports Commission, KFC Guyana, and Bounty Farm, has boosted the GSA’s efforts to prepare the team.

Their contribution has been vital in ensuring the team’s participation in this prestigious regional event.
