Two armed bandits invaded an Enmore Hope West, East Coast Demerara (ECD) house of a family where they gunbutted and threatened one of the occupants before carting off with an undisclosed amount of cash, jewellery, and other valuables.

The incident occurred sometime between 03:45 hrs and 04:00 hrs Friday. The house is occupied by six people: a couple and their four children.

Seeraj Singh, one of the occupants, told the News Room that two armed, masked men broke the lock of their gate and entered the house by breaking a glass window.

The bandits were captured on CCTV footage leaving the scene

Singh said his mother was alerted by strange sounds coming from the house. She was then confronted by one of the bandits, who struck her in her head with the gun and told her not to make any sound.

“They hit her in her head with the gun, press her head against the bed, and told her not to move, not to make any sounds or they going to shoot her,” Singh told the News Room.

While this was happening, he said the second bandit stayed at the bottom flat of the house. The bandits switched off all the lights in the house.

The bandit then ransacked the bedrooms of the house and carted off with valuables, including his mother’s gold jewellery. Singh also said his mother was coordinating a fundraising event for the PPP/C, and the cash from the tickets sold was stolen.

“They went away with everything they basically put their hands on,” Singh said.

Singh said his room was locked from the inside, so entry to his room was not possible. He reportedly slept through the ordeal.

It wasn’t until after the robbery that his mother informed him of what happened.

“My mother knocked on the door and she was like ‘we just got robbed’.

“These guys walked through our front gate and walk down the street normal as anything never happen. So when I run out on the verandah I saw them and I start shout for thief and bandit,” Singh told the News Room.

The bandits managed to flee the scene. A report was made to the Enmore Police Station.

Singh said the Police response was prompt. He said they processed the scene and an investigation was launched.

He told the News Room that over the past few weeks, there have been several robberies in the community. This, he said, calls for increased security.

“Something really needs to be done about the security in the area,” Singh said, noting that his house was robbed before.
