Man to stand High Court trial for murdering Sir Mars 

More than a year after he was charged with his murder, Brian Richard, the man who was accused of murdering educator and comedian Kirwyn Mars, has been committed to stand trial in the High Court for the crime.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce on Friday committed Richard to stand trial at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes of the High Court.

The decision was handed down following the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry (PI) at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate Court.

Mars, popularly known as ‘Sir Mars’, was brutally murdered on May 7, 2023 at Plantation Providence, East Bank Demerara. He was found pinned between his car and an apartment building fence. An autopsy had revealed that Mars was stabbed eight times about his body, including to his chest, right shoulder, collarbone and left hand, and right elbow.

The Police, in their official report, had revealed that two knives were recovered at the scene.

Police had released photographs of Mars and Richard arriving and leaving the Green City Bar located at the corners of D’Urban Street and Vlissengen Road hours before the murder.

It is alleged that Mars and Richard had a “misunderstanding” that escalated inside Mars’ vehicle. As a result, both parties armed themselves with knives and stabbed each other.

Mars exited the vehicle in an attempt to escape, but the suspect reversed the vehicle and pinned him to the fence.

Richard then exited the vehicle and escaped in a southern direction on foot. He was subsequently arrested and confessed to the crime.
