The Government of Guyana may soon construct a “world-class” museum at the area that now houses the dilapidated D’urban Park, President Dr. Irfaan Ali hinted on Friday.

Dr. Ali spoke at the opening of the Jewelz by King’s Hotel on Friday afternoon, outlining the government’s plans for developing the capital city and rapidly expanding the tourism sector.

In so doing, he announced that a world-class museum is coming to the “eyesore” close to his office. D’urban Park is located a stone’s throw away from the Office of the President.

“That is an area that we are going to put this magnificent new national museum to celebrate who we are,” President Ali said.

Durban Park was a grand plan of the former APNU+AFC government, but what citizens got for $1 billion were a few badly-built wooden stands and a stage. Weeks ago, Guyana’s Vice President and the General Secretary of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said his party would rehabilitate the facility once re-elected to government after the September polls.
