Motorcyclist, 78, dies in Long Creek accident


Winston Hibbert, a 78-year-old motorcyclist, died in an accident at Long Creek, Soesdyke/ Linden Highway on Sunday afternoon.
Police Headquarters said the accident occurred around 17:30 hrs.
Police reported that Hibbert, a resident of Long Creek, was riding the motorcycle (#CG 8454) north along the western driving lane of the highway at a fast rate when he lost control and collided with a concrete kerb on the west side of the road.
As a result of the impact, he fell off the motorcycle and received injuries to his head and body. According to information received from persons in the area, as reported in a Police statement, the motorcyclist was at a funeral in the community, consuming alcohol, and was heading home at the time of the incident. Police also said he was not wearing a safety helmet.
However, Winston’s son, Alwin Hibbert, told the News Room that his father was not imbibing. He also said that his father lost control of the motorcycle while riding on some loose sand beside the road, and then collided with a light pole.
Following the accident, Hibbert was picked up in a semi-conscious condition, placed into a passing motor vehicle, and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex. There he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
The body was then escorted by the Police to the Linden Hospital Complex Mortuary for cold storage, awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.
