A motorcyclist has been charged in connection with an accident that resulted in the death of a woman.

Kenwin Collins, 23, of Lot 258 Number 1 Village, Corentyne Berbice, faced the court on Tuesday at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Magistrate Michelle Matthias.

Collins is charged with causing the death of 80-year-old Menawatty Harilall from Lot 70 Chesney, New Scheme, Region Six, due to dangerous driving, as well as riding a motorcycle without a safety helmet and carrying a pillion rider without a helmet as well.

While Collins pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death, he admitted guilt to the charges of riding without a safety helmet and carrying a passenger without proper headgear.

His attorney, Everton Singh-Lammy, informed the court that a settlement had been reached between Collins and the family of the deceased to resolve the matter without further prosecution.

The Police prosecutor, Meika Crawford, did not oppose bail, noting that the case file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further legal guidance.

Magistrate Matthias granted Collins self-bail, taking his financial situation into account. She emphasised the importance of his return to court to ensure the matter is addressed properly.

Collins is scheduled to appear in court again on July 29th.

News Room had reported that at about 08:30 hrs on March 26, 2025,
Menawatty had left home after completing her prayers and was en route to dispose of flowers in a trench a few streets away.

CCTV footage reviewed by this publication clearly shows Menawatty attempting to cross the road when she was hit by motorcycle CG 979, causing her to fall to the road surface. Subsequently, an alarm was raised, and villagers rushed to the scene.

According to information received, the motorcyclist immediately rendered assistance, but despite being rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, Menawatty was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The motorcyclist was arrested, questioned, and subsequently advised that he would be permitted to be charged.
