The involvement of youths in criminal activities remains a concern, and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is intensifying its efforts to ensure young people are informed and encouraged to choose a better path.
“Youth crime worries us all, and we are actively engaged,” Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said on Tuesday.
Blanhum explained that the GPF’s efforts include regular engagements in communities and schools.
“We don’t just talk; we listen to their concerns,” he added.
Blanhum made the disclosure during the third episode of the Safeguarding the Nation programme. He noted that over the years, the Force has been supporting youth initiatives and assured the public that this support will continue.
At the same time, Blanhum urged citizens to remain vigilant to avoid becoming targets of crime.
“In a small country like Guyana, incidents feel bigger because they are close to home. We therefore urge members of the public to stay vigilant, avoid spreading false or misleading information, and always verify with official police sources,” he said.
Last week, Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken revealed that the Force has recorded an 88 percent decrease in serious crimes.
“Even one violent crime is one too many. Together, we can keep our communities safe. We are here to work with you,” Blanhum said.
