More than $250 billion has been invested by the Government of Guyana to develop over 95 housing schemes nationwide over the past five years.

“In five years — just under five years — we have opened or completed 95 new housing developments. To date, for these 95 areas, we are talking about an investment of a minimum of $250 billion,” Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, revealed while speaking at an event in Linden.

Among the areas benefiting from new or ongoing housing developments are Plantation Richmond Hill, Plantation Success, Diamond, Strathspey, and Non-Pariel.

Croal said the development of these schemes has benefited thousands of families and is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable access to housing for all Guyanese.

Before allottees can access their lots, major infrastructural works — including the construction of roads, bridges, and culverts — must be completed. The first phase of infrastructure works only begins once there is at least 75 percent occupancy in the scheme.

Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Water introduced a new block identification exercise, which allows individuals to see exactly where they have been allocated.

“Starting Friday, we will conduct an exercise in all the new areas where lots have been allocated to show allottees exactly where their land will be, while they await the completion of infrastructure works,” Croal said.

Once these works are done and access is granted, a follow-up exercise will be conducted to show allottees their individual lots.

Access to housing remains one of the government’s key priorities. Since 2020, the administration has already surpassed its target of allocating 50,000 house lots by the end of 2025.
