Kenesha Vaughn case: Nigel Hughes’ law firm ready to prosecute but says Police causing delays

The Hughes Fields and Stoby law firm, whose lawyers are the private prosecutors in the Kenesha Vaughn/ Marlan Da Silva murder case, on Friday stated that the team has been ready to proceed with the case but accused the Guyana Police Force of causing delays.

The statement issued by the law firm came after defence lawyer Sanjeev Datadin raised concerns about the slow progression of the case, and told the News Room on Thursday that the defence may move to have the case dismissed because of the delays. Later that day, the Guyana Police Force issued a statement accusing the private prosecutors of failing to move the case forward in a timely manner.

However, the firm sought to set the record straight. It noted that it is the Police causing delays in the case because it hasn’t provided the required evidence needed by the prosecution team.

“The sole institution responsible for the investigation of the murder and the provision of the evidence gathered during the investigation to the Prosecutors, is the Guyana Police Force.

“The presentation of this case at trial depends primarily on the Police witnesses and the conduct of the investigation by the Guyana Police Force,” the firm explained.

Magistrate Judy Latchman, the statement detailed, ordered that all evidence which the prosecution must use should be provided to the court and the defence by May 12.

However, the firm claimed this was not done.

“After the directions of Magistrate Latchman, the Guyana Police Force still had not provided Hughes Fields and Stoby with all of the evidence and sought to provide additional statements as late as the 26th June 2025, a date long after the date on which statements were ordered to be provided by the Magistrate.”

So the Hughes Fields and Stoby team affirmed, “On every occasion when the matter has been called, Hughes Fields and Stoby has been ready and able to proceed with the prosecution of the matter. The success of the prosecution of this matter is dependent on whether the Police witnesses attend court and testify.”

It is for this reason, the firm pushed back against reports that it has been ill-prepared to prosecute the matter. And it welcomed a ull investigation of any complaint the Guyana Police Force in relation to the conduct of the Prosecution of this charge against Marlon Da Silva.
