Thirty-three packets of cannabis were found in an abandoned shop at Jonestown, Mahaica, on Tuesday.

The cannabis amounted to 130 grammes, Police Headquarters said in a statement.

The cannabis was found after a motorcycle patrol at Second Street, Jonestown, conducted a search on an old abandoned shop, and discovered a black plastic bag containing several zip lock bags with a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. The suspected cannabis was found hidden under an old zinc sheet.

As a result, the ranks took possession of the bag of narcotics and took it to the Mahaica Police Station. At the time of the discovery, there was no one around. The suspected cannabis was lodged as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, Police also reported that the ranks on the motorcycle patrol observed a group of men standing at a shop in the same street about an hour later. A search was conducted on them individually, including a 52-year-old labourer residing at Good Hope, Mahaica. The labourer was found with leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be marijuana in his backpack.

He was told of the offence committed, arrested, cautioned, and escorted to the Mahaica Police Station along with the suspected cannabis.

The suspected narcotics were weighed in his presence, which amounted to 14 grammes. He was placed into custody.
