One of the key mobilisers for presidential hopeful and US-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed has walked away from his party amid internal party conflict.

Veerasammy Ramayya, via a Facebook video, announced last evening that he was leaving Mohamed’s We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party and that he would not apologise for doing so.

“I have stepped down from WIN and I just want to stay where I am right now. I’m not going to apologize to Mr Mohamed for stepping down,” Ramayya said.

Even before the launch of the WIN party last month, Ramayya had been a key mobiliser for Mohamed in the East Berbice Corentyne region (six), responsible for organising a series of public meetings.

He said that his decision was as a result of him feeling “insulted” and “disrespected” by the party led by Mohamed who is sanctioned by the US government.

“I am not here to lambaste anyone, but I am not comfortable [with] the way I was treated. I don’t want to be insulted by others, especially people with no character, no character whatsoever,” he stressed.

Ramayya, who resides in region six, also revealed that when Mohamed’s party opened its office at Whim, Berbice, he was not informed or invited. He said he was also excluded from the party’s Nomination Day activities on Monday.

“I don’t want name and fame, but at least some respect should be shown,” he said, adding that false accusations were also made against him within the party.

“Sometimes people can’t do what you can do, but they see you as a hindrance to their progress, to their greediness. This is what is happening right now,” he noted.

Originally a member of the Alliance for Change (AFC), Ramayya resigned from that party twice – in 2015 and 2016 – but continued to support the coalition of which the AFC was a member.

He subsequently threw his support behind the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) which offered him a job as region six coordinator after it returned to office in 2020. He resigned twice from that position – in 2022 and in February of this year – before joining Mohamed and his WIN party.
