Sunflower wins President Ali’s domino competition in Essequibo
Sunflower from Charity planted themselves firmly at the top, pulling off victory in the President Irfaan Ali Domino Competition, hosted at the Queenstown Community Centre Ground in Essequibo.
Seven teams from across the coast- from Charity to Supenaam- battled for the grand prize of G$200,000, with G$75,000 awarded to the runners-up and G$25,000 for third place.
The competition featured several matches leading up to the finals, as teams clashed in intense rounds to secure a spot in the championship match.
In the opening round of the finals, Devonshire Castle jumped into the lead with 26 points, while Sunflower and Henrietta trailed closely with 25 and 24 points, respectively.
Round two brought a shift in momentum as Sunflower surged ahead to 53 points, pushing Devonshire Castle into second with 50 points. Henrietta remained steady in third with 47 points.
In the final round, Devonshire Castle struggled, adding just 11 points to finish with 61.
Henrietta made a late push, finishing with an impressive 76 points, but Sunflower proved too strong, closing the contest with 78 points to secure the title.
Final Standings:
Champions: Sunflower (Charity)- 78 points
Runner-up: Henrietta- 76 points
Third Place: Devonshire Castle- 61 points
A representative from the organising body of the tournament said: “President Ali delivered on his promise to sponsor a domino competition that was not only fiercely contested, but also showcased the true spirit of One Guyana, bringing together communities from all parts of the coast in a celebration of unity, camaraderie and friendly rivalry.”
