Mahdia residents won’t need to leave community to get passports, other services – President

Residents of Mahdia, deep in the mountainous Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), usually travel miles away to the coast for some basic government services not yet available in the town, but President Dr. Irfaan Ali vowed that this will soon change.

“No longer must you have to leave this year for some minor thing like having a query on your birth registration, your passport, your pension or some social welfare support thing

“No longer must you have to have to leave this region to get access to those things. Those services must be provided and will be provided right here in this region under the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government,” President Ali told residents gathered at a public meeting in the community on Friday evening.

Residents have long complained of the lack of key government services in the town. Some believe the community was prematurely declared a capital town in 2018 by former President David Granger, as those services were not yet available.

On Friday, one resident, Tiffiney Gordon, lamented how difficult accessing these services is. So she expressed hope that the government would remedy this soon.

And on Friday night, as he urged the residents to re-elect the PPP in the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections, President Ali said Mahdia’s situation will change. In fact, he highlighted that all the government services will be available “at one desk” so residents won’t have to spend days waiting on documents or any government support.

“We believe that every single region must benefit from a minimum level of service,” he said.

The Guyanese Head of State also highlighted other plans for the region. Projects such a new, more secure market, better roads to connect the Region Eight communities and boosting tourism ventures will be pursued, he said.
