To address the threat they pose to other road users and reckless use of the roads, Traffic Chief, Mahendra Singh said speed-limiting devices for motor lorries will be introduced soon.

Motor lorries have consistently been flagged for violations involving speeding, overloading, and poor vehicle maintenance.

Recognising the risks, Singh said the Traffic Department has partnered with the Ministry of Public Works to establish weight stations aimed at monitoring and controlling vehicle loads.

“In time to come, speed-limiting devices will be installed on lorries to restrict their speed capabilities,” Singh said during an episode of the “Safeguarding the Nation” programme on Tuesday.

The introduction of speed-limiting technology on lorries is expected to further reduce road incidents and enhance safety for all road users.

Singh explained that the Traffic Department has intensified enforcement efforts, deploying multiple patrols in areas where lorries dominate to ensure compliance.

Also, engagements with vehicle owners, fleet managers, and contractors are also ongoing to promote voluntary adherence to road safety laws, Singh said.

Minibuses have similarly been a concern, with frequent offences including speeding, overloading, and loud music. To this end, Singh said the Police have tightened the process for issuing certificates of fitness and road service licenses required for their operation.

Data indicates that in 2024, minibuses were involved in 8 of 117 fatal accidents. This year, only one of 63 fatal accidents involved a minibus, signaling progress in enforcement and compliance.
