‘PPP out in all its glory, while APNU struggles’ – Nandlall says this proves who delivered

Attorney General Anil Nandlall says the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is on an unstoppable roll as packed rallies across the country demonstrate overwhelming support built on real delivery while the opposition APNU and AFC limp behind with dwindling crowds and broken promises.

Speaking during his weekly Tuesday night commentary, Nandlall said the contrast on the ground could not be clearer, pointing to massive turnouts at PPP rallies compared to what he described as the “lukewarm” and “disappointing” meetings of the main opposition – APNU.

“I see the parties are out… the PPP obviously, in all its glory, and the APNU and AFC, struggling along,” Nandlall said.

Nandlall noted that once-loyal strongholds of the PNC-led APNU have turned their backs after experiencing more hardship during the coalition’s time in office from 2015 to 2020.

He cited Bartica, the hometown of the APNU’s Prime Ministerial candidate, where a recent opposition rally was “by any standard an abject failure.”

“Bartica was once a stronghold, yet the turnout was a manifest disappointment,” he said.

“Even on the East Coast at Melanie — which they picked to draw from several villages — the crowd was small.”

According to the Attorney General, the difference is not just about politics but the reality people live every day.

“There is a direct correlation between the failures of the coalition and the resounding successes of the PPP now,” he added.

Nandlall argued that the PPP’s sweeping popularity is built on tangible policies that have touched every Guyanese household.

He pointed to the reversal of over 200 taxes imposed by the APNU+AFC — including VAT on water, electricity, medical supplies, and even school supplies.

The Attorney General highlighted social support like the now $55,000 per child school cash grant — compared to the previous government’s scrapped grant and failed ‘buses, bicycles and boats’ promise.

He also pointed to big wins for households: free textbooks and exercise books, payment of CXC and UG tuition fees, subsidies for spectacles and dialysis, and the Gold Scholarship programme which has supported nearly 40,000 students so far.

The PPP’s job creation, expanded contracts for small businesses, record housing distribution and interventions to keep fuel and electricity costs stable have all made a difference, he argued.

Nandlall said that what was once seen as a racial divide in voting is being eroded by the reality on the ground.

“People have realised the old narratives about the PPP were false. Once they see who really stands with them — who fixes roads, builds houses, removes taxes, funds their children’s education — they will break the chains of blind loyalty,” he said.
