Guyana to host 2026 Caribbean Archery Championships

Guyana has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 Caribbean Development Archery Championships, a landmark achievement for the nation’s sporting scene.

Archery Guyana, the country’s national federation, made the historic announcement following a successful bid against Jamaica.

Sergio Font, Secretary-General of World Archery Americas, confirmed the decision after a vote among eligible English-speaking Caribbean federations.

This victory is a testament to Archery Guyana’s growing capabilities, highlighted by a recent readiness exercise at the Leonora Track and Field Facility during its 2025 Outdoor National Championships.

“We are humbled and honoured by this opportunity,” said Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, President of the Federation.

“This moment belongs to all of Guyana, and we now look forward to working with stakeholders to ensure an unforgettable and world-class event.”

‘Kai the Keen-eyed Kiskadee’ Unveiled as Official Mascot

To mark the occasion, Archery Guyana also revealed the official mascot for the championships: Kai the Keen-eyed Kiskadee.

Kai is a vibrant embodiment of Guyanese identity. The mascot is a Kiskadee, a bird common across the country, known for its bold and energetic nature.

The name “Kai” pays homage to the majestic Kaieteur Falls, one of the world’s most iconic waterfalls, symbolising Guyana’s natural beauty and strength.

Local designer Nicholas Hing described the mascot as reflecting “the spirit of the Championships—bold, keen, and unmistakably Guyanese.”

Kai’s large, focused eyes symbolise the precision and discipline required in archery.

Archery Guyana is now calling on archers, partners, sponsors, and volunteers to help make the 2026 Championships a showcase for the nation’s sporting prowess.

The event promises to be a bold statement of what Guyana can offer the region and the world.
