Guyana’s creative spirit shone brightly over the weekend as local cosplayer Chantal Jagoo captured second place at the 2025 Caribbean Cosplay Championship, held on Sunday, August 3, during the Alias Expo at the Centre of Excellence in Trinidad and Tobago.

Jagoo, representing Guyana through the FumaCon platform, impressed judges and spectators alike with her powerful portrayal of She-Ra from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Her costume — a detailed ensemble complete with handmade armour and accessories — was the product of five months of meticulous work, including learning to sew and mastering prop-making techniques.

The regional competition featured 11 participants from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Guyana, each showcasing their creativity and craftsmanship through elaborate character portrayals. Trinidad and Tobago’s Abigail Harry emerged the winner with a hauntingly accurate depiction of Pennywise from Stephen King’s IT, while Jamaica’s Crystal Salkey placed third as Aurora from League of Legends.

Guyana’s inclusion in this prestigious event was made possible through FumaCon, the nation’s premier anime and comic convention. Organised annually by Seishonen Guyana, FumaCon serves as Guyana’s only qualifying route into the Caribbean Cosplay Championship. Beyond conventions, the group has been instrumental in developing the local creative scene — mentoring young artists, offering platforms for exposure, and building bridges with regional and international creative communities.

The 2025 result is being hailed as another major step forward for Guyana’s growing creative economy. “Competitions like these highlight the innovation, dedication and global potential of our artists,” Seishonen noted in its press release, adding that with every international appearance, Guyana proves its place among the Caribbean’s cultural powerhouses.

Seishonen Guyana also extended gratitude to sponsors who supported this year’s delegation: Caribbean Airlines, Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited, Construct It Inc, KSM Investments Inc, Payless Variety Store, Cole’s Screen Printers, and Amaya Milk Company.

Their support, the group said, reflects a growing national belief in the power of youth, culture, and creative enterprise.
