Cuban man shot dead by security guard at supermarket 

Pedro Alexander Frometa Slonchak, a 34-year-old Cuban national, was shot dead by a security guard at the Real Value Supermarket on Thomas and Church Streets, Georgetown.

The security guard has been identified as 25-year-old Kelvin Belgrave from the KGM Security Service. He was arrested and is in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.

According to a release from Police Headquarters, the fatal incident unfolded at about 09:47 hrs Sunday.

The Police release noted that the security guard was armed with a service pistol and eight rounds of ammunition. Belgrave said he saw Slonchak repeatedly going in and out of the supermarket.

As a result, the guard said, he approached the man to enquire about his problem, and the man held on to him and they got into a scuffle. At the time, the Cuban national reportedly had a knife, and the guard told ranks that he disarmed Slonchak of the knife, then he (Belgrave) dealt the man one stab to his right shoulder and one to his head.

Soon after, Belgrave reportedly drew his firearm and discharged six rounds in the direction of the Slonchak. The male received four gunshot wounds (one to his right side chest, two to his left side abdomen, and one to his left knee). He fell to the ground and was later pronounced dead.

The security guard was later arrested. Investigations continue.
