Suspect in fatal Supply accident arrested during sting operation

A truck driver who struck down a 23-year-old man at Supply, East Bank Demerara on Wednesday afternoon, was arrested hours later during an attempt to flee.

Regional Commander, Superintendent Wayne DeHearte told the News Room that the suspect, identified as 30-year-old David Ragnauth, from Kalichararan Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demrara, was arrested during a sting operation at around 19:30 hrs.

“He was on his way fleeing the jurisdiction [regional division],” Superintendent DeHearte said.

He revealed that the man was arrested on the eastern side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge. He is yet to be questioned about the accident that claimed the life of Alex Persaud.

Persaud, a truck driver from Timehri Base Road, died Wednesday afternoon in what relatives believe was a targeted attack linked to an ongoing court matter.

The incident occurred at around 13:30 hrs along the Supply Public Road.

Persaud’s grandmother, Mary Sunich told the News Room that he parked his vehicle along the roadside with his wife inside, and was waiting to cross the road to collect his salary from his employer.

According to grandmother, the suspect saw Persaud on the road and allegedly struck him down.

“Alex drive and park with his wife in the car and was waiting to cross the road to go and collect his salary from his boss. He and this person had a problem in court because the boy did beat up his [Persaud] cousin and he [Persaud] did lash the boy, so the matter is before the court. When he [the suspect] see Alex, he just swerve off the road and lash Alex upside down,” Sunich explained.

“… I think he hit one or two other vehicles and drive away and park it at Sarah Johanna,” Sunich added.

Persaud was rushed to the Diamond Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, his aunt, Elizabeth Sunich, recounted that she had last seen Persaud the night before his death, when he delivered a truckload of sand to her home in Diamond.

“He got married on July 27, 2025 and I was invited but I couldn’t attend because I was down with the flu, sore throat and fever. I had his gift and congrats card keeping at home and I kept telling him when he’s coming to town to stop by,” the aunt said.

Relatives say the suspect and Persaud were due to appear in court on August 18, 2025.

“Alex don’t make trouble with nobody. Alex was a peaceful, loving child. I had Alex from two years,” his grieving grandmother said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
